In Reply To anyone here ever built a KIT CAR? if so, was it difficult? posted by Pure-Evil on March 04, 2002 at 11:00 PM

Message Yes, you can spend a serious butt-load making a kit car ... especially when it comes to the engine/tranny/etc. However, if you're willing to use less-than-racing-grade parts, used parts, etc, you can get away with a much cheaper job. Being able to perform other parts of the work like painting the can can save thousands too.
The other thing to consider is the kit itself. A crappy kit will cost you a heck-of-a-lot more than just paying a slight up-front premium for a well built kit. Find people who have built the kit you want and find out how everything worked/fit etc. Also keep in mind things like shipping costs (as many kits are UK based) etc.
Here's a couple pics of the kit I will start as soon as I have about $15,000 to get going (completed should be less than $40,000 ... resale value should eb much more). I've been contemplating selling my Z as a downpayment for the first portion of the kit and then getting the rest as I can. I'll probably get a rebuilt or used engine as well ... no reason to pay $15,000 for an engine like a lot of nuts do.

Anyway, here it is ... the famed Ultima GTR

It is a well developed kit that has undergone hundreds of hours of windtunnel testing. McLaren actually used this car to test the engine that the put into the McLaren F1. That says something about a KIT CAR!

I saw one of these that had an accident ... lost control on a race course and went over a 100ft cliff at about 80 Mph ... EVERYTHING ripped off the car, but the frame stayed completely intact and the driver was able to walk away without injury ... moments later the fuel cells burst into flames. I was impressed ... I wish I had pics of the accident - it was quite amazing.

These cars are quite popular on the racing circuit too

The GTR (Ultima's newer model) comes in an unpainted gel coat that can be any color. It looks as good as (or better than) paint which saves you $3,000-$7,000 on paint (unless you're anal and paint it anyway). Here's a pic of the unpainted gel-coat.

Here's another unpainted pic ... this is the "gel-coat" which I believe is just the agent used to release the fiberglass from the mold.

Okay, this is way too long ... sorry - it's just a dream at the moment, but it will happen ... oh yes, it will be mine ... .. . . .
